A PIV valve is used in water and fire protection systems. It has a visible indicator to show whether it’s open or closed. This feature allows system operators and maintenance personnel to easily determine the valve’s status in seconds. They have to be able to do this to safely operate these systems. Essentially, it’s a user-friendly device designed to provide clear, immediate feedback.

Kennedy post-indicator valves are typically used in fire protection systems to control the flow of water to sprinkler systems and hydrants. Thanks to them, firefighters or maintenance workers can quickly turn the water on or off during emergencies or repairs. The valve shows if it’s open or closed, so it’s clear whether water can flow to the sprinklers.

Post-indicator valves are usually placed near the boundary of the property or close to the main water supply line for the fire protection system. They usually stand above ground on a standpipe. In this position, it’s easily visible and accessible.

The recommended distance typically depends on local building codes and fire safety regulations, but a common guideline is at least 40 feet away. At this distance, your Kennedy PIV should still be accessible for emergency services and maintenance without being too close to potential hazards. It’s also far enough to reduce the risk of damage from building fires or structural issues. Every area has specific requirements, so make sure to check the local regulations for your city.
