Water meters are devices designed to measure the volume and flow of water that enters a residential or commercial property from a public water supply system. The measurements recorded by the water meter are used to determine the water/sewer bill the property owner will receive. Water meters are designed for high precision, with each device passing a water meter accuracy test that measures the performance of the meter at low, medium, and high water flow.

In the U.S., water meters are typically calibrated in cubic feet or gallons. There are several different water meter types available, each differing in the measurement methods, accuracy and flow rate requirements. At Blair Supply Corp, our product range includes top-quality Zenner water meters for sale, as well as a range of other products known for utmost accuracy and reliability.

Water meters use two main techniques for measuring and monitoring the flow of water. One relies on displacement, while the other uses velocity. Other common techniques include ultrasonic and electromagnetic metering. Here’s how each of these water meter types differ:

Displacement water meters

A typical residential water meter and some designed for small commercial applications typically belong to the displacement meter category. These meters, also called positive displacement water meters, come in two different varieties, nutating disc and oscillating piston meters. Both of these varieties rely on the movement of specific components in the system to measure the water flow rate. The recorded movement will correlate to the cumulative amount of water that passes through that specific part of the water meter system.

Velocity water meters

Velocity or internal capacity water meters are designed to measure the speed of the water flow in order to determine the water volume. Velocity meters have three subcategories:

  • Turbine meters are a good fit for large commercial applications, water distribution systems, and fire protection since they don’t impede the water flow and lose less pressure when used for high flow rates. On the flip side, turbine water meters can be slightly less accurate than other types.
  • Multi-jet meters rely on multiple ports that create jets of water which hit an impeller, rotating it. This rotation then determines how much water has flowed through the system. Multi-jet water meters are great for small spaces that require exceptional accuracy.
  • Compound meters are suitable for highly variable circumstances, such as significant fluctuations in flow rates. They are designed to maintain optimal accuracy while meeting different measuring needs. They typically feature characteristics of other water meters that may be switched between depending on the current need.

Electromagnetic water meters

These water meters are a variation of velocity meters, but use electromagnetic properties to measure velocity instead of mechanical mechanisms. An added benefit of electromagnetic meters is that they can work in both directions thanks to the absence of mechanical components.

Ultrasonic water meters

Using ultrasonic transducers, these meters send acoustic waves through water in order to determine its velocity. Owing to their design, ultrasonic meters don’t impact the flow rate within a pipe, and are quite easy to maintain as they are typically installed externally.

Modern water meters are designed for incredible accuracy. While the accuracy may vary depending on the type, each water meter provides the precision required for the specific application, whether residential or commercial.

At our warehouses in Avoca, Watertown, and Rochester, we carry water meters of various makes and models.
