4 Types of Kennedy Hydrants & Their Recommended Uses

What are the different types of Kennedy hydrants

Choosing a Kennedy model starts with the project specifications and what the hydrant needs to do. The Guardian family includes standard AWWA configurations, options with additional fire-protection approvals, monitor versions, and insert designs for specific replacement work. If you are looking for a fire hydrant for sale, details such as required approvals, existing underground components, outlet arrangement, and intended use can determine which model belongs on the material list.

What are the different types of Kennedy hydrants?

Kennedy currently offers several Guardian configurations, along with monitor and other specialized models. The K81A, K81D, K81AM, and K81AW are designed for different project requirements and applications.

Standard & listed Guardian models

The K81A and K81D share the Guardian design, but their approvals can determine which one fits the project specifications.

K81A

The K81A is a dry-barrel Guardian model manufactured to meet or exceed AWWA C502 requirements. Kennedy currently offers it with 4½-inch and 5¼-inch main valve openings. This configuration is a practical choice when the project calls for an AWWA-compliant Kennedy unit and does not require the additional UL and FM approvals associated with the K81D.

The model name is only one part of the specification. Main valve opening, trench depth, connection style, nozzle arrangement, and local requirements all have to match the project. Size and outlet configuration also affect how published performance data should be interpreted, which is why understanding pressure and flow numbers matters when comparing models.

K81D

The K81D also meets or exceeds AWWA C502 requirements, but it’s also UL listed and FM approved. That makes it an option for projects whose specifications require those additional fire-protection approvals.

It is available in 4½-inch and 5¼-inch main valve opening configurations, with multiple connection and dimensional options. The required approvals should guide that choice. Dimensions, connections, and other details still need to match the project specifications.

Specialized Guardian configurations

Some projects have needs that a standard K81A or K81D may not address. Kennedy also offers models designed for more specialized applications.

K81AM

The K81AM is Kennedy’s Guardian monitor configuration. Current specifications describe it as a dry-barrel AWWA model with a three-way upper arrangement and a monitor arm. The K81AM is intended for projects that call for a monitor connection as part of the assembly. Kennedy lists multiple inlet styles and outlet options, so the exact configuration still needs to be matched to the project documents. It also helps to understand what Kennedy hydrant maintenance involves when considering future service needs.

K81AW

The K81AW has a different application. Kennedy designed the Guardian Insert for existing Wood-Mathews installations. It allows the existing insert to be replaced while retaining compatible underground components, which can reduce or eliminate the excavation required for a full replacement.

That makes the K81AW a specialized replacement option, not an automatic choice whenever an older hydrant needs service. Existing dimensions and compatibility should be confirmed before ordering.

The project specification should make the final decision

Model names provide a useful starting point, but they do not answer every purchasing question. The required main valve opening, inlet connection, trench depth, nozzle threads, operating direction, approvals, and existing infrastructure can quickly narrow the available options.

The project specifications for dry-barrel units can be highly detailed, which is why two seemingly similar models may not be interchangeable on a particular job.

When several compliant options meet the project requirements, the reasons contractors choose Kennedy models can help narrow the choice further. The final selection still needs to match the drawings, submittals, and specifications for the project.
