All You Should Know About Water Mains

What is the mains water supply

Any public water works supply system has pipework designed to distribute water to homes and businesses. These large pipes are often referred to as water mains, while the water supplied is known as mains water. Water mains maintenance is typically performed by local governments, and paid for by property taxes and water rates.

Many homeowners want to learn about water mains in order to find out who would be responsible to fix a water main if it breaks. But it is not just homeowners who want to know more about water mains. In order to ensure reliable municipal water supply, pipe repair professionals strive to always stay on top of the latest pipe materials for water mains and appropriate maintenance and repair equipment. Keep on reading to learn more about municipal water mains.

What is the mains water supply?

As mentioned, mains water is distributed via large pipes, known as water mains, buried under sidewalks and roads that lead to different destinations. Smaller pipes, referred to as water lines, connect water mains to homes, businesses, and apartment buildings. Mins water is distributed after treatment for use in residential, commercial, and industrial purposes. These pipes can be made from different materials including PVC and copper.

When it comes to maintenance and repair, water mains are typically the responsibility of local governments. Water lines, on the other hand, are usually the responsibility of the home or business owner.

How do water mains work?

Arterial water mains, also referred to as primary feeders, transport water from a treatment plant to the areas of major water use in a community. Secondary feeders, or water lines, connect to the mains and are usually smaller in diameter. These pipelines are typically installed within public right-of-way in order to provide access to service connections for potential water users.

While there are different types of water distribution networks, these pipelines are typically installed in a gridiron pattern in order to allow water circulation in interconnected loops. This also enables any damaged pipe sections to be isolated and repaired without unnecessary disruption to the community water usage. Additionally, dead-end patterns can also be used. As these patterns don’t allow circulation, the water supply provided by them is usually more susceptible to problems with taste and odor caused by stagnation.

Water mains considerations

Water distribution pipelines need to be able to withstand both internal and external forces and corrosion. Internal water pressure, caused by soil weight and any vehicles that may pass above, places stress on these pipes. Water mains may also need to resist water-hammer forces. When valves close too quickly, pressure waves may surge through the water supply system.

Another important consideration regarding water mains and water lines is corrosion, both internal and external. If the water supplied through these pipes is corrosive, the pipes might rust internally, particularly if they are made from metal. If the soil surrounding the pipes is corrosive, external corrosion may occur.
